Unwanted, nuisance phone calls can be extremely irritating. They generally come in two forms; live marketing calls from a real person and automated marketing calls using a pre-recorded message. However, there are various steps you can take to cut down on the number of calls you receive.
Register with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) – The most effective step you can take is to register with the TPS. Signing up both your mobile and home phone to the TPS makes it illegal for companies in the UK and EU to call you if you haven’t opted to receive sales calls. This is easy to do and, importantly, free. The quickest way to register is via the TPS website.
Don’t consent to 3rd party marketing – Often when you sign up or buy something online you are given the option to receive marketing communications from 3rd party companies. It is important you read the terms carefully and avoid opting in or you will likely receive nuisance calls, even if you have registered with the TPS.
Note down the number and report it – The TPS can’t cut out nuisance calls completely, but they do take rule breaches seriously and offer a complaints handling service. If the call is a live unsolicited direct marketing call and you are able to provide as a minimum the company name and/or telephone number, date and time that the call that you wish to report was received, your complaint will be sent to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) who can build a case against the company.
